How to choose a social media analytics tool
Scheduling, listening and competitive benchmarking are three different jobs bundled under one category name — decide which one you actually need first.
"Social media analytics" covers three genuinely different jobs, and most of the buying confusion in this category comes from tools that do only one of them being compared against tools that do all three. The first job is publishing: scheduling posts and measuring how your own content performed. The second is listening: tracking what anyone, anywhere, says about your brand, whether or not you posted about it. The third is competitive benchmarking: comparing your own social performance against named rivals. Some tools in this category do one well; a few try to do all three at enterprise scale.
You need a tool here if you post on social media on any regular schedule, or if conversations about your brand happen where you can't see them without help — reviews, forums, unbranded mentions. You don't need a dedicated platform if your presence is one or two channels posted to manually by one person; the native scheduling in each platform may be enough until that stops being true.
Publishing first, or listening first
Buffer, Hootsuite and Later are built around the publishing calendar — queue posts, review a unified inbox, get post-level engagement analytics on what you shared. None of the three is a listening tool in the sense of tracking unprompted mentions across the open web; Hootsuite offers listening only as a paid add-on. Brand24, Mention, Brandwatch, Meltwater and Talkwalker go the other direction: they monitor mentions of a keyword, brand or competitor across social, news, blogs and forums, and none of them schedules or publishes a post. Sprout Social, Emplifi and Sprinklr are the platforms trying to do both from one seat, at correspondingly higher prices.
Competitive benchmarking is its own, narrower niche
If your main question is "how does our posting compare to three named competitors," a full listening platform is more than you need. Rival IQ and Socialinsider exist specifically for this: tracking a set of named companies' public posting performance, engagement and follower growth side by side, priced by the number of tracked companies and months of historical data rather than by mention volume across the open web. Both add a lighter listening feature — saved keyword searches — on higher tiers, but that's a bolt-on to the core competitive-reporting job, not the product's reason for existing.
Scale of listening: mid-market versus enterprise
Among the pure listening tools, price tracks mention volume and query sophistication, not features. Brand24 and Mention are priced for small-to-mid marketing and comms teams that need alerting on spikes and basic sentiment, not exhaustive historical research. Brandwatch and Talkwalker are built for enterprise research and insights teams doing large-scale, Boolean-query-driven analysis with deep historical data and image or logo recognition — capabilities a smaller brand rarely needs and would overpay for. Meltwater sits closer to that enterprise end but leans toward PR and communications teams specifically, pairing social listening with traditional news and broadcast monitoring in the same feed.
Where customer care and commerce fit in
Emplifi and Sprinklr extend past marketing analytics into social customer service — routing messages and mentions like a helpdesk — and, in Emplifi's case, ratings and reviews for e-commerce. If your social team also owns customer response at volume, this bundling can replace a separate helpdesk integration; if social is purely a marketing function, it's paying for a module you won't staff.
How pricing scales, and what "unlimited seats" really means
Publishing tools mostly price per connected channel (Buffer) or per user (Hootsuite, Sprout Social). Listening tools price by tracked keywords and monthly mention volume (Brand24) or are fully custom, quote-based contracts scaled to mention volume and modules licensed (Brandwatch, Meltwater, Talkwalker, Sprinklr). Emplifi is the outlier, pricing on outcomes with unlimited seats included — worth confirming against your own headcount if per-seat pricing elsewhere would actually cost more.
A shortlist by situation
- Solo creator or small team, simple scheduling. Buffer's free tier and per-channel pricing are the cheapest entry point.
- Visual-platform-first brand (Instagram, TikTok, Pinterest). Later.
- Established team wanting scheduling plus an app-marketplace ecosystem. Hootsuite.
- Marketing team that wants publishing, engagement and light listening in one seat-based tool. Sprout Social.
- Affordable mention monitoring and spike alerts, no publishing needed. Brand24 or Mention.
- Enterprise research team needing deep historical, Boolean-query listening. Brandwatch or Talkwalker.
- PR/comms team needing earned media alongside social listening. Meltwater.
- Named-competitor benchmarking is the whole job. Rival IQ or Socialinsider.
- Marketing, care and commerce from one enterprise vendor. Emplifi or, at larger scale, Sprinklr.
Questions to ask vendors or in a trial
- Does this include social listening across the open web, or only our own connected accounts?
- How is mention volume counted toward our plan limit — do false positives count against us?
- Can we track named competitors, and how many, at our tier?
- What's the true seat cost once our whole team, not just one admin, needs access?
- Is sentiment analysis automated only, or can we review and correct it?
Common mistakes
Buying a publishing tool expecting it to also catch unbranded mentions is the most common gap — Buffer, Hootsuite's core plan and Later will show you engagement on what you posted, not what a customer said about you unprompted elsewhere. The reverse mistake is buying a listening platform and never connecting it to a publishing workflow, leaving two disconnected tools where an all-in-one option like Sprout Social or Emplifi might have served both jobs for less total cost. A third is comparing enterprise listening platforms on price alone without a quote — none of Brandwatch, Meltwater, Talkwalker or Sprinklr publish figures, and mention-volume-based contracts vary enormously by industry.
