Audio analytics

The analysis of sound and audio signals, from speech and music to ambient noise, to extract patterns and meaning.

Audio analytics is the analysis of sound signals, speech, music, or ambient noise, to detect patterns, classify content, or extract meaning from audio rather than from text or video.

Techniques range from measuring acoustic properties like volume, pitch, and frequency, to machine learning models that classify sound events or transcribe speech for further analysis. It differs from speech analytics, a subset focused specifically on spoken language content, in that audio analytics also covers non-speech sound: music recognition, environmental noise monitoring, or audio quality checks.

Applications include podcast platforms analyzing listening patterns behind podcast downloads, media companies fingerprinting music for royalty tracking, and manufacturers using acoustic analysis for equipment monitoring. It overlaps with computer vision and video analytics in multimedia applications that analyze both the audio and visual tracks of the same content. A common pitfall is background noise and overlapping sound sources degrading accuracy, which is why most production systems specify the acoustic conditions they were validated under.
