Watch time

The total minutes viewers spend watching a piece of video content, a key ranking and monetization signal on video platforms.

Watch time is the cumulative number of minutes viewers spend watching a piece of video content, summed across all views, and is one of the primary signals video platforms use for ranking and monetization.

It differs from a simple view count, which is typically registered after only a few seconds regardless of how much of the video was watched, while watch time credits only the minutes actually viewed. Platforms combine per-video watch time with an audience retention curve to see not just how much was watched in total but at which points viewers dropped off.

Creators and publishers track watch time because recommendation algorithms on platforms like YouTube weight it heavily, and because ad revenue on many platforms is tied to it rather than to raw views. It is closely related to engaged time on other content formats and feeds directly into content engagement and creator economy earnings. A common pitfall is optimizing for watch time alone, which can reward padded or misleadingly long content at the expense of viewer satisfaction.
