Free federal program providing real-time earthquake data and probabilistic seismic hazard maps for the US and its territories.
The USGS Earthquake Hazards Program monitors earthquakes worldwide and publishes probabilistic ground-motion hazard maps through its National Seismic Hazard Model (NSHM). Outputs include peak ground acceleration values at defined probability levels (for example, 2% chance of exceedance in 50 years) for the conterminous US, Alaska and Hawaii, plus near-real-time shaking-intensity maps (ShakeMap) after significant earthquakes and design ground-motion values used in building codes. Tools such as the Unified Hazard Tool and Earthquake Hazard Toolbox let engineers, planners and researchers query hazard curves for any location. As a US federal program, all data, maps and tools are free and openly published, funded through the federal budget rather than sold.
