Lex Machina

Federal litigation analytics platform mining court dockets to reveal how specific judges, courts, attorneys and law firms handle cases.

Lex Machina, owned by LexisNexis, mines federal court dockets and filings, and a growing set of state courts, to produce litigation analytics: how a specific judge rules on particular motion types, how long cases before them typically take, an opposing counsel's win/loss record in a case type, and damages awarded in comparable cases. Litigators use it to shape case strategy, staffing and settlement posture before filing or in the early stages of a matter, and in-house counsel use it to evaluate outside counsel and forecast litigation costs. It is narrower than Westlaw Precision's broader research-plus-analytics offering and more federal-court-centric than Trellis, which specializes in state and local court coverage.
