People analytics

Applying data analysis to workforce data such as hiring, performance and attrition to guide HR decisions.

Also called: HR analytics, workforce analytics

People analytics applies the same analytical methods used elsewhere in a business, reporting, statistics, and increasingly machine learning, to workforce data such as recruiting, performance, compensation, and attrition. It sits inside HR but usually reports its findings the same way any other function does, through a dashboard or scorecard of workforce KPIs.

Typical analyses include modeling which employees are at higher risk of leaving, measuring time-to-hire and source quality across the recruiting funnel, analyzing engagement survey results for patterns, checking for pay gaps across comparable roles, and forecasting future headcount needs against business plans. Some of this uses predictive analytics techniques such as attrition risk scoring, though many programs still run mainly on descriptive reporting.

People analytics matters because workforce costs and decisions are large enough to justify the same rigor applied to sales or marketing data, and it can surface issues, like a team with unusually high regrettable attrition, well before they show up in business results. The main pitfalls are privacy: workforce data is sensitive and often legally protected, so results need appropriate aggregation and access controls; and treating correlations involving protected characteristics as if they were safe or actionable without careful review.
