Verdict
Pendo and Userpilot both combine product usage analytics — funnels, retention, feature adoption — with a no-code builder for in-app guides, tooltips, checklists and surveys, so the same platform that shows where users get stuck can also build the fix. Both track events and let non-engineers ship onboarding flows without a developer for every change.
The difference is scale and positioning. Pendo is the broader platform: session replay, sentiment analysis, roadmapping and feedback collection (Listen), and an AI layer (Pendo Novus, in open beta) sit alongside the core analytics, aimed at product organizations that want one platform to cover analytics, guidance and voice-of-customer together. Userpilot is more narrowly focused on SaaS activation and onboarding specifically, with autocapture to reduce manual event tagging and an AI assistant (Lia) for building flows, positioned explicitly as a lower-cost alternative to enterprise digital adoption platforms.
Choose Pendo if
- You want session replay, sentiment surveys and feedback/roadmapping tools in the same platform as analytics and guides.
- Your organization is large enough that Pendo's custom-quoted Base, Core and Ultimate tiers make sense against your MAU volume.
- Product, not just growth, needs the analytics — Pendo's feature set reaches further into general product management workflows.
Choose Userpilot if
- Your core need is SaaS onboarding and activation flows built from the same usage data, without a broader platform's price tag.
- You want published, though still substantial, pricing ($299/month Starter, from $849/month Growth) rather than a fully custom quote at every tier.
- A small or mid-size team wants to move fast without provisioning a large enterprise rollout.
What they share
Both are freemium/subscription tools priced around monthly active users rather than raw event volume, and both let you A/B test onboarding flows against the same data that flagged the problem in the first place. Neither is a pure measurement tool — if all you need is analytics without in-app guides, Amplitude, Mixpanel or Heap will cost less and add less surface area to learn. Gainsight PX is a third option worth checking if the same data needs to feed account-level customer success health scoring, not just product-led onboarding.
