Morningstar Sustainalytics

ESG risk rating provider measuring companies' unmanaged ESG risk exposure, widely used by investors and lenders.

Sustainalytics, owned by Morningstar, produces the ESG Risk Rating, which quantifies a company's unmanaged ESG risk on a numeric scale where lower is better, alongside controversy research that flags specific incidents and ongoing issues. It also rates carbon and fossil-fuel involvement and provides fund and index-level ESG scoring. Like MSCI ESG Research, its ratings are analyst-driven from public and licensed sources rather than built solely from a company's own questionnaire responses, which distinguishes it from CDP and EcoVadis. Sustainalytics ratings are widely referenced in sustainability-linked loan and bond frameworks, where the interest rate is tied to a borrower's ESG risk trajectory, as well as in investor portfolio screening.
