MSCI ESG Research produces the MSCI ESG Rating, scoring companies from AAA to CCC on their exposure to and management of industry-specific ESG risks, and feeds MSCI's widely used ESG indexes. It also provides climate metrics such as Implied Temperature Rise and portfolio carbon footprinting, plus controversy screening flags for investors. Unlike CDP or EcoVadis, which score companies primarily from data the company itself submits, MSCI's analysts build ratings largely from public disclosures, news and other independent sources, making it an investor-side research product rather than a corporate self-disclosure or reporting tool. It is distributed through institutional data licenses rather than sold to the rated companies themselves.
