Itron sells the smart meters, communication networks and grid-management software that utilities use to collect and act on consumption data across electricity, gas and water. Its analytics layer turns meter reads and network telemetry into distribution automation, distributed-energy-resource (DER) management, outage and damage-prevention insight, and customer-facing usage data, rather than being sold as analytics software independent of Itron's metering hardware and networks. Smart-city modules extend the same sensor and communications infrastructure to municipal use cases such as streetlight and environmental monitoring. Because the analytics are tied to Itron's own metering and network stack, utilities weighing it against a pure-software energy analytics vendor such as AutoGrid are really deciding between an integrated hardware-plus-software platform and a software layer sitting on top of whatever metering they already have.
