Verdict
Both send email and SMS, but they were built for different starting points. Klaviyo is built on top of ecommerce order data — it knows what a customer bought, so campaigns and flows can be attributed to revenue and segmented by purchase behavior without a separate analytics setup. Mailchimp is a general-purpose campaign tool that works for any business, ecommerce or not, and leans on subject-line and content A/B testing rather than flow-level revenue attribution.
The measurement gap is the real decider. Klaviyo's automated flows support holdout groups, so you can check whether a win-back flow actually recovered revenue against a control group instead of just counting opens. Mailchimp's testing compares one campaign variant against another; it has no equivalent holdout tooling for isolating a flow's incremental effect.
Choose Klaviyo if
- You run a Shopify, WooCommerce or Magento store and want revenue attributed to specific flows and campaigns automatically.
- You need cohort and predictive metrics like customer lifetime value and churn risk built on the same data.
- You want to measure a flow's true incremental lift with a holdout group, not just its open rate.
Choose Mailchimp if
- You're not an ecommerce business, or your conversion doesn't happen through a connected store.
- You want a permanent free tier and the simplest possible path to a first campaign.
- Your testing needs stop at comparing subject lines and content, not proving incrementality.
The honest caveat
Klaviyo's pricing scales with your contact list regardless of how engaged those contacts are, which can get expensive for a large, mostly-dormant list — the same problem Mailchimp has, just with a lower starting price. Neither publishes exact tier pricing without running their calculator, so get a real quote against your list size before committing either way. If your business outgrows Mailchimp's basic automation, the honest next step is usually Klaviyo (for ecommerce) or a broader lifecycle platform like Customer.io or Braze (for everything else), not a Mailchimp upgrade tier.
