Transkribus is a platform for automatically transcribing historical handwritten and printed documents using AI text-recognition models, including pre-trained models for many scripts and languages and tools to train custom models on a researcher's own document set for higher accuracy. Archives, libraries and individual researchers upload document images, run recognition, correct results in a built-in editor, and export transcriptions in formats usable for further text analysis. It is operated by READ-COOP, a European cooperative society formed to keep the technology in nonprofit, researcher-governed hands after it grew out of an EU-funded research project. Access runs on a credit system: a free monthly credit allowance covers light use, with paid annual plans providing more credits, storage and training runs.
