Google Tag Manager is a free tag management system that lets marketers and developers add and update tracking and marketing tags on a website or app through a web interface instead of editing source code. Tags are organized into a container, published through a version-controlled workflow with a preview/debug mode, and can use built-in triggers (clicks, form submits, scroll depth) or a template gallery covering Google and third-party vendors. Beyond the standard client-side web container, GTM offers a server-side (server container) option that runs on infrastructure the customer hosts, typically on Google Cloud, moving tag execution off the browser. GTM is cloud-based, requires a Google account, and is most commonly paired with Google Analytics 4, Google Ads and Floodlight, though it can fire any vendor's tag.
