Free citizen-science platform from Cornell where birders log sightings, building the world's largest bird occurrence dataset.
eBird is a free citizen-science project run by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology that lets birdwatchers log what species they see, where and when, through its website and mobile app. Submissions are checked by a network of volunteer regional reviewers and machine-learning filters before joining the public dataset, which now holds hundreds of millions of observations and updates continuously as new checklists are submitted. Researchers, conservation groups and land managers use eBird data and its derived products, such as range and abundance models, to study migration timing, population trends and habitat use; the raw dataset is downloadable and an API is available for programmatic access, both at no cost, under Cornell's terms of use.
