Verdict

Vantor (renamed from Maxar Intelligence in October 2025, after Maxar Technologies was acquired by Advent International and split into Vantor and Lanteris) and Planet Labs are both satellite operators selling imagery and imagery-derived analytics to defense, intelligence, civil-government and commercial customers, and each lists the other as an alternative. The decisive difference is the resolution-versus-revisit trade-off built into their respective satellite fleets.

Vantor's WorldView constellation delivers higher-resolution optical imagery — down to 30 cm, pan-sharpened to 15 cm — with up to 15 revisits a day over populated areas, plus WorldView Radar (SAR) imagery and AI-built 3D spatial products (Tensorglobe). Planet Labs' SuperDove fleet images nearly the entire Earth's land surface roughly once a day at coarser resolution (a few meters per pixel, eight spectral bands), continuously building a searchable historical archive; its separate SkySat fleet adds sub-daily, 50 cm tasked imagery for specific locations when higher resolution is needed.

Choose Vantor if

  • You need the highest available commercial resolution for a specific location, or radar (SAR) imagery.
  • Frequent, high-resolution tasked revisits over a populated area matter more than continuous global daily coverage.
  • You want AI-fused 3D spatial data products (Tensorglobe) or Vivid basemap products built into the offering.

Choose Planet Labs if

  • You need near-daily imagery of essentially anywhere on Earth's land surface, not just tasked locations, for monitoring or change detection over time.
  • A continuously built, searchable historical archive matters as much as new captures.
  • You want automated change-detection, methane-emission or forest-carbon analytics built on top of a consistent daily dataset, rather than one-off high-resolution captures.

What they share

Both operate under quote-only, contract-based pricing with no published price list, both serve overlapping defense, intelligence and civil-government customers, and both offer a searchable archive alongside new tasking rather than requiring every request to be a fresh capture. Neither vendor's record here discloses independently verified accuracy figures for their derived analytics products (change detection, emissions estimates), so validate those specifically against your use case rather than the marketing description alone. Many large imagery programs use both: Planet Labs for continuous monitoring and change detection, Vantor for high-resolution tasked follow-up once something is flagged.
