Verdict

Apple Podcasts Connect and Spotify for Creators (formerly Anchor) are the two free, platform-native dashboards nearly every podcaster ends up using, and they are not really rivals so much as two halves of one picture. Each reports plays, listeners, and engagement only for the audience listening inside that specific app — Apple's tool has no visibility into Spotify listens, and Spotify's tool has none into Apple. Neither is measured against the industry's IAB Podcast Measurement Guidelines the way a dedicated third-party vendor is: Spotify left the IAB in 2023 and has not recertified either its creator dashboard or Megaphone to the current guidelines, and Apple does not publish methodology against those guidelines either. For most podcasters the real decision isn't which one to use, it's whether to add a proper cross-platform host or measurement layer on top of both.

Choose Apple Podcasts Connect if

  • Your audience skews toward Apple Podcasts and you want its specific engaged-listener and subscription-conversion data.
  • You run a paid subscription show and need Apple's Subscription Analytics view of trials, conversions, and estimated proceeds.
  • You're comfortable with data requiring a minimum of five unique listeners in a period before it appears.

Choose Spotify for Creators if

  • Your audience skews toward Spotify, or you host and distribute through Spotify's free tools already.
  • You want episode-level audience retention curves showing exactly where listeners drop off.
  • Built-in monetization — subscriptions or the Spotify Audience Network — matters alongside analytics.

What they share

Both are entirely free, require no separate hosting decision if you distribute through them, and report geographic, device, and follower-growth data at a similar level of depth. Both also share the same structural limitation: a single-app view of a multi-app audience, and no independent certification behind the numbers.

The honest caveat

Nearly every real podcast is distributed to both Apple and Spotify simultaneously, so this is rarely an either/or choice — most podcasters check both dashboards regularly. The genuine decision is whether you need a cross-platform view badly enough to add a dedicated host with unified analytics, such as Buzzsprout or Transistor, or an independently certified number from Triton Digital if you're selling ads and a buyer needs a figure neither Apple nor Spotify can currently back with IAB certification.
