Verdict

Anthology and Instructure Canvas Analytics are not products you shop between independently of your LMS — each is the analytics layer of a specific learning management system, Blackboard Learn and Canvas respectively. Nobody running Canvas is realistically going to license Anthology's analytics, and vice versa. The comparison mostly matters if your institution is deciding between the two LMS platforms in the first place, with analytics as one input to that larger decision.

Both draw on the learning-activity data the LMS itself generates: course engagement, assignment progress, at-risk flags inside a course. Anthology adds institution-wide accreditation and outcomes-assessment reporting (Illuminate) plus accessibility and evaluation tools (Ally, Evaluate). Instructure's advantage is a more open data posture: Canvas Data provides raw, event-level exports for institutions that want to build their own dashboards or feed a warehouse, and LearnPlatform separately evaluates whether the other edtech tools layered onto Canvas are actually effective.

  • Your institution runs Blackboard Learn and you want analytics, accreditation reporting and accessibility tooling from the same vendor.
  • Institution-wide accreditation and outcomes-assessment reporting matters as much as course-level engagement data.

What they share

Both are bundled into their respective LMS licenses rather than sold as fully independent analytics products, both are quote-priced with no public rate card, and both focus on course-level engagement and progress data rather than the cross-system predictive modeling that Civitas Learning or EAB Navigate provide.
