Web of Science is Clarivate's citation index of peer-reviewed journals, conference proceedings and books, with cited-reference data going back to 1900. Unlike broader indexes, its Core Collection applies editorial selection criteria before a journal is added, which institutions use to argue it favors quality over raw coverage. It underpins the Journal Impact Factor (via Journal Citation Reports) and feeds Clarivate's InCites analytics product for benchmarking researchers, departments and institutions. Access is through an institutional subscription rather than a public interface, and it integrates with reference managers such as EndNote. Analysts choose between it and competitors like Scopus mainly on differences in journal coverage, regional and non-English representation, and whether editorial curation or breadth matters more for a given analysis.
