Sofar Ocean operates the Spotter network, a fleet of thousands of solar-powered ocean sensing buoys that measure waves, wind, currents, temperature and water quality and relay observations in near real time by satellite. Sofar layers analytics on top of this sensor data: Wayfinder provides ship routing and fuel-optimization guidance plus storm and seakeeping alerts for commercial shipping, and Sofar's marine weather models blend its buoy observations with traditional forecasts. Customers include government and defense agencies (including NOAA), commercial shippers, and marine researchers. The platform is cloud-based, paired with purchased or leased hardware; Sofar does not publish list prices, though smaller Spotter buoy units have been reported in the low thousands of dollars per unit by third parties.
