Pentaho is a combined data-integration (ETL) and business-analytics/reporting platform dating back to 2004 as an independent open-source project. Hitachi acquired it in 2015 and ran it as a business unit of Hitachi Vantara; in June 2026 it was sold again, to LEO Software, an operating group of Constellation Software, with no detailed public roadmap yet issued and reported workforce cuts following the sale. Its free Community Edition historically shipped under Apache-2.0, but Hitachi Vantara moved newer community releases (from version 10.2) to a Business Source License that permits development and evaluation only, not production use — production requires a commercial Pentaho+ license. Given the recent ownership change and unclear near-term roadmap, buyers should confirm current licensing and support commitments directly with LEO Software before standardizing on it.
