Our World in Data is produced by the Global Change Data Lab, a UK nonprofit working in partnership with the University of Oxford, and is funded by a mix of philanthropic grants (including from the Gates Foundation), grant-making bodies and reader donations rather than by selling access. Its core contribution is curation: it aggregates long-run datasets from primary sources like the UN, WHO and World Bank, cleans and standardizes them, and pairs every chart with explanatory articles so readers get context, not just numbers. Every chart is interactive and embeddable via iframe on other sites, and both the underlying data and the code are openly licensed (CC BY) for reuse. Its own Grapher tool lets anyone build custom charts from the same curated datasets. It sits downstream of primary sources like World Bank Open Data and Eurostat rather than competing with them directly.
