Data.gov is the US federal government's single catalog point for open datasets published across executive branch agencies, spanning topics like climate, health, finance, transportation and public safety. It's built on the open-source CKAN platform, harvesting metadata automatically from agency-level portals so datasets stay discoverable in one place even though the underlying files remain hosted by the originating agency. There's no registration barrier: anyone can search, browse by topic collection, and pull data through its public API. Because it aggregates rather than hosts everything centrally, dataset quality, update frequency and documentation vary widely by contributing agency, and Data.gov itself doesn't standardize that. It's funded and operated by the General Services Administration as public infrastructure, not a commercial product.
