Workflow automation tool, not an analytics product; data teams use it to wire pipelines and alerts between systems.
n8n is a workflow automation platform, included here with that framing made explicit: it is not an app builder or a BI tool, and does not put an analytics UI on a warehouse the way Retool or Appsmith do. Data teams use it to connect and automate steps between systems — for example triggering a dbt run, posting a Slack alert on a data-quality failure, or moving records between a CRM and a warehouse — via a visual, node-based canvas that also allows custom JavaScript/Python code nodes. Its source is available under n8n's own Sustainable Use License, a 'fair-code' license: anyone can self-host, inspect and modify it for internal use free of charge, but reselling it as a competing hosted service is restricted, so the Open Source Initiative does not consider it open source. A free self-hosted Community edition, a managed cloud with execution-based pricing, and an Enterprise tier with SSO and version control cover most deployment needs.
