Kubecost is purpose-built for Kubernetes cost visibility, breaking down cluster spend by namespace, deployment, label or team using real-time cost allocation rather than the coarse per-instance billing clouds provide natively. It grew out of the open-source OpenCost project (which Kubecost co-created and donated to the CNCF) and layers a UI, historical reporting, savings recommendations, and multi-cluster/multi-cloud rollups on top. IBM acquired Kubecost through its 2024 Apptio integration, and the product is now sold and branded as IBM Kubecost. The free 'Foundations' tier covers unlimited clusters up to 250 cores, which is generous enough for many small-to-mid deployments; larger or multi-cluster enterprise use requires a quoted self-hosted or cloud-hosted paid tier.
