IBM Instana is an APM and infrastructure monitoring product built around fully automated discovery and configuration — agents detect services, dependencies, and technology stacks without manual setup, and refresh metrics at one-second resolution rather than the 10-60 second intervals common elsewhere. It targets microservice and Kubernetes environments where manual instrumentation doesn't scale, and includes automatic root-cause analysis on top of its dependency graph. It is available as SaaS, self-hosted, or consumption-based pay-per-use, billed per Managed Virtual Server (MVS), a normalized compute unit IBM uses across the Instana product line.
