The DHS Program
USAID-backed program of nationally representative household health surveys across nearly 100 low- and middle-income countries.
The DHS Program conducts and archives Demographic and Health Surveys: large, nationally representative household surveys measuring population, maternal and child health, nutrition, HIV, fertility and related indicators in nearly 100 countries, with more than 400 surveys fielded since 1985. It is historically funded by USAID; after a 2025 US funding disruption, continued operation of the website and archive has been supported by a Gates Foundation grant. Registered users can download de-identified survey microdata free of charge for approved research, or query aggregated indicators through the STATcompiler tool and an API without registration. Data includes biomarker measurements and geographic coordinates for spatial analysis, making it a primary source for global health and development researchers, governments and NGOs.
