Wastewater testing service that analyzes municipal sewage for population-level disease and substance-use signals.
Biobot Analytics tests wastewater samples from municipal treatment plants to estimate population-level trends in infectious disease and substance use, a method known as wastewater-based epidemiology. Because most people who are infected or using a substance ultimately flush biological traces into the sewer system, testing a sewershed's composite wastewater sample can reveal community-level trends earlier and more completely than clinical testing alone, without identifying any individual. Biobot provides the sampling kits, logistics, laboratory analysis, and reporting dashboards used by health departments and other agencies; it does not sell software as a standalone product but a monitoring service built around its own lab pipeline. It was selected by the CDC in 2022 to help operate and expand the National Wastewater Surveillance System (NWSS), covering pathogens including SARS-CoV-2, influenza, and mpox, and has since extended into monitoring high-risk substances such as opioids across more than 1,000 U.S. sampling locations.
