How to choose an enterprise BI platform

"Enterprise BI" is a different purchase from the self-service tools most people picture when they hear business intelligence. If your evaluation is really about which product a marketing team likes best, read how to choose a BI tool instead — this guide is for organizations buying a governed reporting layer that many business units, applications, and thousands of end users will depend on for years, where a bad choice is expensive to unwind.

You need this category when reporting spans multiple business units with a shared, audited definition of "revenue"; when the platform has to feed data into other applications rather than just render dashboards for people; or when procurement, security, and compliance sign off on the vendor before an analyst ever opens it. If a small team just wants to build a dashboard this afternoon, a lighter self-service tool will get there faster and cheaper.

Governance: where does the definition of a metric live?

This is the question that separates enterprise BI from everything else. Strategy One (formerly MicroStrategy) is built around a governed semantic layer that keeps one definition of each metric consistent across dashboards, mobile apps, and anything the metric is embedded into — the model is the product, not an accessory to it. Oracle Analytics Cloud and SAP Analytics Cloud take a similar approach but tie governance to their respective application ecosystems rather than offering a vendor-neutral layer. • Multi-vendor or heterogeneous stacks. Strategy One positions itself as the vendor-neutral option, deployable on Strategy Cloud, self-hosted, or on any major public cloud, and integrates with Snowflake, Redshift, BigQuery, Azure, Salesforce, and SAP rather than assuming one source system.
• A decision-intelligence layer on top of an existing warehouse. Tellius is not a full BI suite competing on dashboards; it pairs natural-language search with automated root-cause and driver analysis against Snowflake, Redshift, BigQuery, or Databricks, and is often bought to sit alongside an incumbent BI tool rather than replace it.

How mature is the AI layer, really

Every vendor here now ships an augmented analytics or natural language query feature — Strategy One's Auto agent (Auto SQL, Auto Data Modeling, Auto Dashboard, Auto Bot), Oracle's AI-generated narrative insights and anomaly detection, SAP's Smart Insights and Smart Discovery, and Tellius's natural-language search paired with automated driver and anomaly analysis. The vendor records describe what each feature is designed to do; none of them publish independently verified accuracy figures, so treat every AI claim as a hypothesis to test on your own data rather than a settled fact. A natural-language query answered well in a demo, against a clean sample dataset, tells you little about what happens when it is pointed at your actual, messier semantic model.

Deployment and where the platform can run

Deployment flexibility varies more than the marketing pages suggest. Strategy One explicitly supports Strategy Cloud, self-hosted, and major public clouds as first-class options. Oracle Analytics Cloud is primarily a managed cloud service but offers Oracle Analytics Server for organizations that need to keep analytics workloads on their own infrastructure. SAP Analytics Cloud, by contrast, is fully cloud-hosted with no self-managed option — if your compliance requirements rule out that model, it is not on your list regardless of how well it fits SAP data. Pricing: budget for a sales conversation, not a checkout page

None of the governed enterprise platforms in this category publish self-serve pricing. Strategy One, Oracle Analytics Cloud, and SAP Analytics Cloud are all quote-only, sold through enterprise sales. 1. Where does the definition of each core metric live, and can it be reused outside this one product?
2. What does embedding a dashboard or a HyperIntelligence-style card into another application cost, separately from named-user licenses?
3. Can we run a proof of concept against our real warehouse and semantic model, not a vendor sample dataset?
4. What does role-based access control look like across business units — can one region's data be hidden from another without duplicating content?
5. If the AI/natural-language feature is central to the pitch, what happens when it is asked a question against our messiest, least-documented tables?
6. What is the actual deployment model — cloud-only, self-hosted, or a choice — and does that match our compliance requirements?

Common mistakes

• Buying the platform tied to your ERP without checking whether its BI layer, not just its data connectivity, is actually the best fit for how your analysts work.
• Treating an AI-generated insight as validated because it appeared confident and well-formatted in a demo.
• Underpricing embedded analytics and mobile delivery, which are often quoted separately from the core BI license and can dominate total cost at scale.
• Skipping the semantic-layer question because a lightweight tool like Klipfolio looked good in a quick pilot, then discovering a year later that five teams have five different definitions of the same metric.
