How to choose a travel and hospitality analytics tool
This category splits into aviation intelligence and hotel revenue and guest analytics — two markets with different buyers and almost no overlap.
"Travel and hospitality analytics" is really two separate markets that happen to share a category label. One is aviation data and intelligence — schedules, flight tracking, fleet and demand data licensed to airlines, airports and travel technology companies. The other is hotel revenue and guest analytics — pricing optimization, competitive benchmarking and guest-data platforms sold to hotel groups and owners. A travel-industry data buyer and a hotel revenue manager are almost never evaluating the same tool, so the first useful move is figuring out which half of this category you're actually in.
If you're in aviation: decide what kind of aviation data you need
- OAG is built around flight schedules — data from more than 900 airlines, updated roughly every 15 minutes, plus historical schedule data reaching back over 20 years. It also covers airfare data, seating capacity and real-time status, delivered via Snowflake integration, REST APIs and its Analyser+ dashboard.
- Cirium, part of LexisNexis Risk Solutions (itself part of RELX), covers a broader span: flight tracking, an aircraft fleet database, schedules, passenger traffic and emissions data. Its data underpins flight-status features in many consumer travel apps as well as fleet-planning work inside airlines and lessors.
- Amadeus Travel Intelligence comes from a different angle entirely: it's built on Amadeus's position as one of the largest global distribution systems, so its intelligence is about aggregate booking and search-demand patterns — the kind of demand signal an individual airline or hotel can't see on its own — rather than schedule or tracking data.
If you need current or historical schedule and status data specifically, OAG and Cirium are the direct comparison (see Cirium vs OAG). If you need aggregate travel-demand and booking-pattern intelligence for route planning or destination marketing, Amadeus's GDS-derived data is the more specific fit — it doesn't do flight tracking or fleet data at all.
If you're in hospitality: decide what part of revenue you're optimizing
- Duetto and IDeaS Revenue Solutions are the two leading dedicated revenue management platforms for hotels, both covering dynamic pricing, demand forecasting and budgeting, both extending beyond hotels (Duetto into casinos and resorts; IDeaS into cruise lines and parking operators). They compete directly with each other.
- STR does not set prices — it benchmarks them. STR aggregates occupancy, ADR and RevPAR data directly from participating hotels so a property can compare itself against a defined competitive set, and its data is referenced widely enough in lender covenants and franchise agreements that it functions as an industry standard rather than one vendor's opinion among several.
- Revinate addresses a different layer again: guest data. It unifies guest profiles from property-management systems and other sources, then uses that unified profile to drive direct-booking marketing and review/reputation monitoring — the goal is reducing OTA dependence by converting more bookings directly, not setting the rate itself.
These four are not fully substitutable. A hotel group typically needs pricing optimization (Duetto or IDeaS), competitive benchmarking (STR) and guest-data/marketing (Revinate) as three separate, complementary capabilities rather than picking just one.
Weigh scale and specialization
STR's role as an industry-standard benchmark is a genuine differentiator: because so many hotels contribute data and so many lenders and franchisors reference STR figures, choosing it is less a competitive decision than an industry-participation one — most hotel groups above a certain size subscribe regardless of what else they run. Duetto and IDeaS, by contrast, are a live competitive choice: IDeaS is one of the longest-established players in the space, reporting service to more than 34,000 properties, while Duetto positions itself around covering both revenue optimization and bottom-line profitability (via its HotStats module) rather than pricing alone.
How pricing actually works here
Every tool in this category is quote-based with no published rate card — normal for enterprise travel-industry data and hospitality software sold through direct sales and demo-request processes. Aviation data (OAG, Cirium, Amadeus) is typically licensed by data volume, API access level and use case; hotel revenue and guest tools (Duetto, IDeaS, STR, Revinate) are typically priced per property or per room, scaling with portfolio size. Budget for a genuine scoping conversation with each vendor rather than expecting comparable headline numbers.
A shortlist by situation
- If you need flight schedule, status or historical data for route or network analysis, start with OAG; if you also need fleet, emissions or passenger-traffic data in the same platform, look at Cirium.
- If you need aggregate demand or booking-pattern intelligence beyond your own reservation data, Amadeus Travel Intelligence is built specifically on GDS-scale booking data.
- If dynamic pricing and demand forecasting for a hotel, casino or resort is the job, compare Duetto and IDeaS Revenue Solutions directly.
- If you need to know how your property performs against a competitive set, STR is close to a mandatory subscription at scale rather than an optional analytics purchase.
- If unifying guest data and reducing OTA dependence through direct-booking marketing is the goal, Revinate is purpose-built for that rather than for pricing or benchmarking.
Questions to ask vendors
- For aviation data: is this schedule data, live tracking data, or demand intelligence derived from bookings — and which one does our use case actually need?
- For hotel revenue tools: does pricing scale by property, by room count, or by a mix, and how does that change as our portfolio grows?
- How current is the data, and what is the actual update cadence versus a marketing claim of "real-time"?
- What integration work is required against our existing property-management or reservation systems?
- For STR specifically: what competitive set are we being compared against, and can we choose or adjust it ourselves?
Common mistakes
- Evaluating an aviation-data vendor and a hotel-revenue vendor against each other because both carry the "travel and hospitality" label — they don't compete and rarely share a buyer.
- Buying a pricing/revenue-management tool (Duetto, IDeaS) expecting it to also deliver competitive benchmarking — that is STR's specific job.
- Treating guest-data unification (Revinate) as a replacement for revenue management rather than a complementary, separate capability.
- Skipping a real scoping call because "quote-based" sounds opaque — every vendor here prices by portfolio size and use case, and the number is knowable before you sign.
