Value over replacement player (VORP)

Value over replacement player measures a player's surplus production compared with a replacement-level player at the same position, rather than compared with the league average. Replacement level is defined as the production expected from a readily available substitute: a waiver-wire pickup in fantasy sports, or a minimum-contract or bench player in professional roster contexts.

The concept is expressed roughly as VORP = player's production − replacement-level production at that position. This differs from average-based comparisons, since the league average already includes many above-replacement players, understating how much value a true starter provides over what a team could realistically obtain on short notice. The same underlying idea appears across sports under different names, including wins-above-replacement in baseball, though the specific formula and baseline vary by sport and by source.

VORP is used to rank players on a scarcity-adjusted scale, which matters most at positions where the drop-off from starter to replacement is steep, and it informs draft strategy alongside average draft position and roster decisions alongside player valuation model and draft analytics work. The key pitfall is that "replacement level" is a modeling choice rather than a fixed constant, so VORP figures from different sources are not directly comparable unless they share the same definition of replacement.
