Supply chain visibility
The ability to track goods, orders, and inventory across every stage of a supply chain, often close to real time.
Supply chain visibility is the ability to track goods, orders, and inventory across every stage of a supply chain, ideally close to real time, rather than relying on periodic reports or assumptions from a static plan.
It's built from data feeds across systems — purchase orders, warehouse management, carrier tracking, and supplier portals, often including fleet telematics — stitched together into a shared dashboard or control tower, so a delay at any single stage is visible immediately rather than discovered only once a delivery is already late.
Better visibility lets planners react to disruptions before they cascade, supports stronger on-time in full and fill-rate performance, and reduces the information gaps that feed the bullwhip effect. It's also a precondition for effective route optimization, since both depend on knowing current positions rather than planned ones. A common pitfall is collecting real-time data without changing planning or replenishment decisions in response, which provides little benefit over the periodic reporting it replaced.
