Paywall conversion rate

The share of visitors who hit a paywall and go on to subscribe or pay for access, a core metric for publishers.

Paywall conversion rate is the share of visitors who encounter a paywall, a point where content or a feature is restricted to paying users, and go on to start a paid subscription.

It is calculated as subscriptions started / visitors who hit the paywall, and is distinct from overall site conversion rate because the denominator is specifically people already shown a payment prompt, not all visitors. Publishers test paywall type, a metered model with a set number of free articles versus a hard paywall, timing, and price point to influence this rate.

Publishers and subscription businesses treat paywall conversion as a central health metric because it links content engagement directly to revenue, and it is often segmented by content topic, device, or traffic source to see what actually drives subscriptions. The main pitfall is optimizing the rate in isolation: tightening a paywall can raise conversion among remaining visitors while shrinking total reach, and subscriber churn can rise if the content behind the paywall does not sustain the value that justified subscribing.
