Follower growth rate

The percentage change in an account's follower count over a period, used to track audience-building momentum on social platforms.

Follower growth rate is the percentage change in an account's follower count over a defined period, used to gauge whether an audience is expanding, stagnant, or shrinking.

It is calculated as (followers gained - followers lost) / starting followers x 100 for the period in question. Because it is a rate rather than a raw count, it lets accounts of very different sizes be compared, and it differs from a raw follower count in that a small account growing quickly can show a much higher rate than a large, stagnant one.

Practitioners track follower growth rate alongside engagement rate and content velocity, since a rising follower count paired with falling engagement often signals low-quality or purchased growth rather than genuine interest. It is a key input into creator economy valuations and influencer rate cards. The main pitfall is treating growth in isolation: a spike from a viral post or a giveaway rarely converts into lasting engagement, and platforms periodically purge fake accounts, which shows up as sudden, misleading negative growth.
