Contract analytics
Using software to extract, review, and analyze clauses, terms, and obligations across many contracts at scale.
Contract analytics uses software to extract, review, and analyze clauses, terms, and obligations across a body of contracts at scale — payment terms, termination rights, renewal dates, liability caps — rather than requiring a lawyer to read each agreement individually.
It combines Named Entity Recognition and text analytics to locate and classify clause types, typically summarizing results into a searchable repository; some tools support natural language query so a user can ask, in plain language, which contracts contain a given clause or expire within a certain window.
It's used for due diligence in mergers and acquisitions, tracking renewal and termination deadlines across a large contract portfolio, and auditing compliance with negotiated standard terms. It's related to but distinct from litigation analytics, which looks at case and court outcomes rather than agreement text, and from e-discovery, which is scoped to evidence for a specific legal matter. A common pitfall: automated clause extraction can miss unusual phrasing or non-standard contract structures, so high-stakes findings are typically still verified by a lawyer before being relied on.
