Absenteeism rate

The share of scheduled work time lost to unplanned employee absence over a period.

Absenteeism rate measures how much scheduled work time is lost to unplanned absence, such as unscheduled sick days, rather than approved leave like vacation or parental leave. A common formula is unplanned absence days / (average headcount x scheduled work days) x 100 over a chosen period.

Definitions vary by organization in what counts as "unplanned": some include all sick leave, others exclude leave covered by a medical certification or disability accommodation, so the rate is only comparable across teams or companies when the underlying definition matches. Absenteeism is usually tracked by department, shift or manager, since it often concentrates around specific working conditions or teams rather than spreading evenly.

Rising absenteeism is a common early signal of low employee engagement or burnout, and organizations often watch it alongside attrition risk scores because chronic absence frequently precedes a formal resignation. It also has direct operational cost, since unplanned gaps disrupt staffing plans built during workforce planning. A pitfall is treating a rising rate as purely a discipline problem; it can just as easily reflect a workplace or workload issue that will eventually surface as higher employee turnover rate if left unaddressed.
