Metabase and Tableau answer the same broad question — dashboards and self-service analytics — for different builders. Metabase is open source, can be self-hosted for free with unlimited users, and is designed so a non-technical person can ask a question or build a chart without SQL, with a SQL editor available underneath for anyone who wants it and an AI assistant (Metabot) for natural-language querying. Tableau, now part of Salesforce, is built for analysts who want to explore data by dragging and pivoting freely — its drag-and-drop authoring in Tableau Desktop or browser-based web authoring is deeper and more flexible for genuine visual exploration than Metabase's simpler query builder, and it adds Tableau Prep for data preparation and Tableau Pulse/Agent for AI-generated summaries and conversational analysis.
