Verdict

Google Analytics 4 is free, event-based and built for depth: cross-platform user journeys, machine-learning-driven predictive metrics, audience building for remarketing, and native integration with Google Ads and the rest of Google Marketing Platform. That depth is also the complaint most often made against it — GA4's interface and data model have a real learning curve, and it uses cookies and persistent identifiers, which in many jurisdictions means a consent banner.

Plausible Analytics is a paid subscription (or a free self-hosted deployment of the same open-source, AGPL-3.0-licensed code) built around the opposite trade-off: a single-page dashboard readable without training, a small cookieless tracking script, goal-based conversion tracking, and no consent banner required in many jurisdictions as a result. Plausible Cloud is priced by monthly pageviews starting around $9/month with a 30-day free trial, and data can be imported from an existing GA4 property to ease a switch.

Choose Google Analytics 4 if

  • You spend meaningfully on Google Ads and want conversion data flowing back into bidding automatically.
  • You need the deepest available reporting — predictive metrics, detailed audience segmentation, cross-platform app-plus-web journeys.
  • Cost has to be zero and you are comfortable with cookies and the consent-banner requirement that comes with it.

Choose Plausible Analytics if

  • You want traffic and conversion numbers without a cookie banner, and your questions are the standard "how much traffic, from where, to which pages."
  • You would rather pay a modest subscription (or self-host for free) than manage GA4's complexity for a small-to-mid-size site.
  • Data ownership and EU-based hosting matter to your organization or your clients.

The honest caveat

This is a genuine trade-off, not a strict upgrade in either direction. GA4 will answer questions Plausible was never built to answer — deep behavioral segmentation, cross-device journeys, tight ad-platform feedback loops — and Plausible will never try to match that depth by design; its whole pitch is that most sites do not need it. Conversely, GA4's cookie-based tracking and consent requirements are a real cost — legal review, banner implementation, and data loss from declined consent — that a lightweight tool like Plausible avoids structurally. Pick based on which report you actually open monthly, not which tool has more total features. See how to choose a web analytics tool for the fuller decision path.
