Verdict

Circana and NielsenIQ are the two largest syndicated data providers measuring retail point-of-sale, e-commerce and consumer-panel activity for market share, pricing and category trends, and they compete for essentially the same customers: CPG manufacturers, retailers and their agencies. The clearest difference in the records is category breadth. Circana was formed by the 2022 merger of IRI, retail POS data historically strongest in CPG, and The NPD Group, consumer panel and POS data across durable goods such as electronics, apparel and toys, giving it coverage that spans both traditional grocery-and-household CPG and durable-goods categories in one company. NielsenIQ, spun off from Nielsen Holdings in 2021, is one of the largest players in the category by geographic reach, with global retail POS, e-commerce and panel data, but its lineage and depth are more concentrated in classic CPG measurement.

Both are private companies sold on data subscriptions and custom research engagements with no published pricing.

Choose Circana if

  • Your business spans both CPG and durable goods categories, and you want one provider covering both rather than stitching together two.
  • You need demand forecasting or promotion-effectiveness analysis that draws on the combined IRI and NPD dataset.

Choose NielsenIQ if

  • Your primary need is global geographic coverage, especially markets or categories NielsenIQ has measured longest.
  • You want products under the NIQ Discover or Nielsen Connect branding specifically, or already have an existing Nielsen relationship — note that NielsenIQ is a separate company from Nielsen's media and audience measurement business, despite the shared name.

The honest caveat

Neither company publishes pricing or category-level coverage detail specific enough to declare a universal winner — the right choice depends on which categories and geographies you actually need measured, which only a vendor conversation scoped to your business will answer. See choosing a retail analytics platform and demand forecasting.
