Verdict

Both are donor CRMs, but built for different points in a nonprofit's growth. Blackbaud (via Raiser's Edge NXT) is a large, enterprise-oriented suite that bundles fundraising CRM with financial management, grants and ticketing — the kind of system a large nonprofit or university adopts as an institutional platform rather than a single department's tool. Bloomerang is scoped tighter: a donor CRM built around retention as the core metric, with unlimited users on every plan and pricing tied to the size of your donor database rather than seats.

The practical decision is less about features than organizational fit. If fundraising is one module inside a wider financial and operational system you already run or plan to run, Blackbaud's breadth pays for itself. If fundraising is the whole job and you want a faster, lighter system focused on keeping the donors you already have, Bloomerang is built for exactly that and nothing else.

Choose Blackbaud if

  • You need fund accounting, grants management or ticketing in the same system as fundraising, not bolted on separately.
  • You are a large or institutional nonprofit (university, hospital foundation, large NGO) used to enterprise procurement and implementation.
  • You want one vendor relationship across the whole back office, not just development.

Choose Bloomerang if

  • Donor retention and lapsed-donor tracking are your priority metric, not just gift totals.
  • You want unlimited users at every tier so cost doesn't grow with headcount.
  • You are a small or mid-size nonprofit that wants a faster, more affordable implementation than an enterprise suite.

The honest caveat

Blackbaud's pricing is quote-only and generally reflects enterprise-scale implementation and support; Bloomerang publishes its starting prices and scales with database size, which most smaller organizations will find easier to budget. Neither record settles usability by itself — the CRM your development staff already knows how to use is a real cost to switch away from. See choosing a nonprofit fundraising platform and customer segmentation for how giving-history segmentation is typically built in either tool.
