Vertica is a columnar, massively parallel processing (MPP) SQL database built for high-performance analytics on large volumes of structured and semi-structured data. Originally founded by Michael Stonebraker's team and later owned by HP and Micro Focus, it is now part of OpenText's analytics portfolio. Vertica emphasizes deployment flexibility: the same engine runs on-premises, in Vertica in Eon Mode with storage-compute separation on cloud object storage, in Kubernetes, or via a managed cloud offering, so customers can move workloads without rewriting SQL. It includes built-in machine-learning functions, time-series and pattern-matching analytics, and geospatial support, competing with Exasol, Teradata, and Snowflake for demanding, high-concurrency analytical SQL.
