Payscale

Compensation-benchmarking data and pay-management software, built on a mix of self-reported and employer-submitted salary data.

Payscale sells compensation data and software that HR and comp teams use to benchmark jobs against the market and build pay structures: Ascent for pay decisions, Paycycle for merit and raise planning, and JobNav Recruiter for pricing job postings. Its underlying salary database originated from, and still substantially relies on, individuals self-reporting their own pay through Payscale's online salary survey, supplemented by employer/HR-submitted compensation data for its enterprise products. That self-reported foundation is the main limitation to weigh against payroll-verified sources: figures reflect what people report about their own pay rather than audited employer records, though volume and statistical cleaning are used to reduce noise. Payscale also runs a free consumer-facing salary-lookup tool alongside its paid enterprise compensation-management software, and reports pricing hundreds of thousands of jobs and administering roughly $2 trillion in aggregate salary data.
