MarineTraffic tracks the positions of vessels worldwide using the Automatic Identification System (AIS), a maritime broadcast standard, received through a network of coastal and satellite receivers, and layers analytics on top: port congestion and estimated time of arrival, vessel and fleet history, casualty and incident data, and trade-flow analysis for commodities moving by sea. Its free tier lets anyone look up individual vessel positions on a map, while paid subscription plans and APIs serve shipping companies, ports, logistics firms, insurers and commodity traders needing bulk data access, fleet monitoring or trade-flow analytics. MarineTraffic was acquired by data and analytics firm Kpler in 2022, filling the maritime role that FlightAware fills for aviation and Geotab fills for road fleets.
