Janes (long known as Jane's, publisher of reference works such as Jane's Fighting Ships) sells a structured database of open-source defense and security intelligence: military equipment and weapons specifications, order-of-battle and force-capability data, country and CBRN threat profiles, and defense budget/program tracking. Its distinguishing claim, relative to raw OSINT tools, is that Janes' own analysts collect, cross-check and validate entries rather than presenting unverified scraped web data. The data is delivered as a searchable platform and as a data feed (APIs, GeoDB, Parquet and similar formats) that customers can pull into their own systems. Buyers are primarily defense ministries, armed forces, intelligence agencies and defense-industry analysts who use it for intelligence assessment, operational planning, logistics and forecasting. Janes operated for years as part of IHS Markit before becoming an independent company again in 2019 under private-equity ownership.
