Bloomberg Terminal is the standard desktop platform for institutional finance, combining real-time pricing across every asset class with news, fundamental and estimates data, fixed-income analytics, portfolio and risk tools, execution management, and the Bloomberg Messenger network that traders use to communicate. Access is through a leased hardware/software bundle sold per seat, with functionality reached through function codes rather than a conventional app menu. It is deployed on-premises via Bloomberg-provided terminals or B-Unit software on a firm's own hardware, with data and compute residing on Bloomberg's network. Its closest substitutes are LSEG Workspace and FactSet, though Bloomberg's liquidity in fixed income and its chat network are its main lock-in.
