Miss Manners: The older women made a list of things the bride is doing wrong
1+ hour, 33+ min ago (488+ words) DEAR MISS MANNERS: My 30-year-old cousin is getting married, and my relatives believe she is doing everything wrong. In fact, a growing list of the bride-to-be's "inappropriate" wedding choices has become the family's favorite topic, especially among the 65+ ladies (all discussed behind my cousin's back, of course). There are many more alleged faux pas, including the cut of the bride's gown and the schedule of the hotel shuttle, but the above are the most discussed. I've argued that most of these decisions are up to the bride. But because I'm only 44, a member of an unfortunately "ignorant" generation, my opinions have been ignored. And so, I appeal to you, Miss Manners " a respectable lady who specializes in etiquette " to determine if these complaints are valid or not. GENTLE READER: The expression "It's their day, and they can do whatever they…...
Instant analysis of 49ers’ 20-9 win despite Panthers’ three interceptions of Purdy
1+ hour, 58+ min ago (1253+ words) SANTA CLARA " Brock Purdy threw an opening-drive touchdown pass to Jauan Jennings, duping all into thinking this "Monday Night Football" affair would be a Brock-Is-Back showcase and a 49ers" blowout. Then Purdy got intercepted on the 49ers" next drive. And the next. And the next. The 49ers overcame that Thanksgiving Week generosity and toppled the Carolina Panthers 20-9, thanks largely to defensive heroics that included two interceptions by safety Ji"Ayir Brown. Then again, the win wasn"t secured until Purdy converted a fourth-and-1 sneak at midfield so the 49ers could kill the final two minutes. The playoff-stalking 49ers (8-4) have won two consecutive games for the first time since their 3-0 start to this topsy-turvey, injury-laden season. Next comes their penultimate road game, a Sunday visit to Cleveland against the Browns (3-8) and rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders, who"ll make his first home start after winning Sunday 24-10 in…...

Live 49ers-Panthers updates: NFC wild-card race featured on Monday Night Football
5+ hour, 59+ min ago (230+ words) The 49ers are hosting the Carolina Panthers at Levi's Stadium on Monday night with improved position in the NFC playoff hunt on the line. Carolina (6-5) is one game behind the Niners (7-4) for the seventh and final seed in the NFC with six games remaining for both teams this season. The winner will hold a head-to-head tiebreaker in a crowded NFC field. The primetime game is also Christian McCaffrey's first game against the team that drafted him eighth overall out of Stanford in 2017, saw him honored on the All-Pro teams twice (first team in 2019), then traded him to San Francisco in 2022. McCaffrey's all-around game has been particularly useful for the 49ers this season as they have seen injuries hit their receiving corps hard. Jauan Jennings (ribs, ankle) and Ricky Pearsall (knee) are back, but this week provided a new twist as news broke…...

Affordable homes project might replace Walnut Creek apartments
9+ hour, 29+ min ago (245+ words) WALNUT CREEK " Dozens of affordable homes are in the works for a Walnut Creek site where existing apartments would have to be demolished to pave the way for a new residential project. The 29-unit Sierra Garden Apartments complex now occupies the development location, according to the Apartment Finder website. Berkeley-based Satellite Housing Associates owns the 1.4-acre site and intends to develop the new affordable homes project, Walnut Creek planning documents show. The project would be 100% affordable, according to the proposal. Satellite Housing is seeking a streamlined review process under multiple state laws, Walnut Creek public records show. The developer also is seeking waivers for the project's height, number of stories, the building's setback from existing structures, and a parking concession, according to the planning documents. School district eyes hundreds of San Jose homes intended for its workers
10+ hour, 44+ min ago (587+ words) SAN JOSE " A South Bay school district intends to develop hundreds of San Jose apartments and offer them at rental rates that district employees can afford. The San Jose Unified School District has proposed the development of a 288-unit apartment project at 760 Hillsdale Ave. in San Jose, according to a preliminary proposal on file with city planners. "Workplace housing is a pressing issue for us," said Seth Reddy, the district's chief business officer. "We cannot pay our staff sufficient wages to live in comfort and dignity in this area." The district plans to put the housing development on an undeveloped site alongside Hillsdale Avenue next to State Route 87 in San Jose. Other efforts are underway to attempt to address the "missing middle" of workers who make too much money to qualify for numerous affordable housing projects but don't make enough…...

James Comey and Letitia James indictments are dismissed
12+ hour, 11+ min ago (259+ words) The rulings from U.S. District Judge Cameron McGowan Currie amount to a stunning rebuke of the Trump administration's efforts to target Trump's political opponents. It also highlights its legal maneuvering to hastily install a loyalist prosecutor willing to file the cases. Monday's order deals exclusively with the mechanism the Trump administration employed to appoint Halligan, a former White House aide with no prior prosecutorial experience, to lead one of the Justice Department's most elite and important offices. Halligan was named to the job in September after a different interim U.S. attorney, Erik Siebert, was effectively forced out amid pressure from the Trump administration to file charges against Comey and James. After Siebert resigned, Comey's lawyers argued, the judges of the federal court district should have had exclusive say over who got to fill the vacancy. Instead, Trump nominated Halligan while publicly imploring…...
