Tennis Elo rating

Tennis Elo rating applies the Elo system, originally built for chess, to estimate a tennis player's skill as a single number that can be converted directly into a win probability against any other rated player. Each match updates both players' ratings based on the gap between the expected and actual result, with underdog wins moving ratings more than expected ones.

Tennis-specific implementations commonly extend the base Elo model with surface-specific ratings, since the same player's relative strength shifts meaningfully between hard, clay, and grass courts, and some models weight recent matches more heavily or adjust for best-of-three versus best-of-five formats. This differs from the official ATP and WTA rankings, which are points-based totals accumulated from tournament results over a rolling 52-week window; rankings reward participation and results over a fixed period, while Elo aims to estimate underlying skill and head-to-head win probability at a point in time.

Bettors, forecasters, and analysts use tennis Elo, often alongside serve points won and break point conversion, as an input to win probability model tools and pre-match pricing. There is no single official tennis Elo; models differ in how they weight surface, recency, and margin of victory, so ratings from different providers are not directly comparable.
