Showback and chargeback
Two ways of attributing shared cloud costs to teams, one for visibility only, the other billing the cost to their budget.
Also called: showback, chargeback
Showback and chargeback are two ways of attributing shared cloud or infrastructure costs to the teams that incur them. Showback reports each team's estimated share of cost for visibility only, with no money actually moved between budgets; chargeback goes further and actually bills the cost back to each team's budget, making it a real line item they must account for.
The two differ mainly in consequence: showback is informational and lower-friction to introduce, useful for building cost awareness before teams are ready to be held financially accountable, while chargeback creates a direct incentive to optimize spend but requires accurate, trusted cost allocation, since teams will dispute a bill they think is wrong. Both depend on tagging and cost allocation practices detailed enough to split shared infrastructure, like a common data platform, fairly across consumers.
Both practices matter as core FinOps mechanisms for connecting spend to the decisions that drive it, feeding cloud unit economics calculations at the team or product level. A common pitfall is moving straight to chargeback before cost allocation is accurate enough to trust, which produces disputes that undermine confidence in the whole cost model.
