Revenue operations (RevOps)
The function that aligns sales, marketing and customer success operations, data and systems around one revenue process.
Also called: revops
Revenue operations, or RevOps, is an organizational function that unifies the operations, tooling and metrics behind sales, marketing and customer success, which historically ran as separate teams with separate systems and separate definitions of the same numbers. The goal is one shared view of the revenue funnel from first touch through renewal.
In practice RevOps owns things like CRM and data hygiene, process design between marketing handoff and sales follow-up, compensation and territory administration, and the reporting layer that produces a single set of pipeline and forecast numbers for the business. This is different from a sales-operations team, which focuses narrowly on sales process and tooling; RevOps deliberately spans the full customer lifecycle, including retention metrics like net revenue retention.
RevOps matters because misaligned definitions across teams, for example marketing and sales counting a "qualified lead" differently, quietly corrupt sales forecasting and pipeline reporting. A common pitfall is treating RevOps as a reporting or dashboarding role rather than a process-and-systems one; without authority over how data is captured upstream, a RevOps team can only describe problems in sales velocity and KPI tracking, not fix them.
