Payment success rate

The share of attempted payments that complete successfully, from checkout initiation through to settlement.

Payment success rate measures the share of attempted payments that complete successfully, from the point a customer initiates checkout through to a confirmed, settled transaction. It is calculated as successful payments / total payment attempts, and unlike the narrower authorization rate, it typically also captures failures that occur after authorization, such as a customer abandoning a 3-D Secure verification step, a network timeout, or a session that expires before payment finishes.

Payment success rate is shaped by factors outside the issuer's authorization decision alone: how well the checkout flow is built, whether the right payment methods are offered for a given market, retry logic for transient failures, and routing decisions that send a transaction through the acquirer most likely to approve it. This makes it a broader, more end-to-end metric than authorization rate, and closer in spirit to conversion rate, though it measures completion of payment specifically rather than the full purchase journey.

The metric matters because even a small drop in payment success translates directly into lost revenue, and low success rates are a major, often underdiagnosed driver of cart abandonment rate. A common pitfall is blaming customers or fraud for what is actually a fixable technical issue, such as outdated card data or a poorly configured checkout, which can be identified by breaking the rate down by failure reason, payment method, and region rather than looking at the aggregate number alone.
