Monetization funnel

The sequence of steps from installing a game to becoming a paying player, used to find where potential spenders drop off.

Also called: in-game monetization funnel

A monetization funnel is the sequence of steps a player moves through from installing a game to becoming a regular paying player: typically install, complete tutorial, reach a defined engagement milestone, view a store or offer, and make a first in-app purchase. Tracking the drop-off at each step is a specific application of general funnel analysis to a game's revenue path rather than its signup or activation path alone.

Each stage has a conversion rate — the share of players who reach it that proceed to the next — and the funnel is usually cut by player segmentation and acquisition source, since a channel that drives high install volume but low store-view conversion is bringing in the wrong players, not just fewer of them. This differs from average revenue metrics like average revenue per daily active user, which summarize overall monetization but do not show where in the journey players are being lost.

Studios use the funnel to prioritize fixes: a large drop between tutorial and first purchase points to an onboarding or pricing problem, while a drop between install and tutorial completion points to a design problem unrelated to monetization. A common pitfall is optimizing the funnel in isolation from live operations timing, since a conversion rate observed during a promotional event will not hold once the event ends.
